Thanks Volker and Robert, it turns out that the installation on that
machine was not complete. Apparently Debian splits Maxima into a maxima
package and a maxima-share package so a fair bit was missing.
Interesting that it does run reasonably well without the maxima-share
package. The installation of the machine is handled by a colleague and
after showing him the problem he worked on it overnight and found it was
missing a package. He upgraded the machine also and I have tried again
and it works like a charm! In fact, some other issues have also cleared
up :-)
