Maybe the maximabook project could fill some gaps here:
http://maxima.sourceforge.net/docs/maximabook/maximabook-19-Sept-2004.pdf
Its style is much more friendly than the texinfo manual, with some
detailed examples and graphics. The bad news is that the project seems
to be stopped.
When I recently removed the old documentation from the 'descriptive'
package in the cvs repository, I thought that with this material a new
section of the maximabook could be written, statistical plots included.
When we write texi documents, I am sure that some ideas, descriptions
and possible applications are not included due to the concise style of
the reference manual, but the maximabook could be a perfect place for
them.
