I can't reproduce your problem on XMaxima 5.11.0 running under GCL. I tried
adding various control characters to the input file, ending the file without
a CR or LF, etc., and couldn't break it. Even if the file is in Unicode, it
returns (though with garbage, since it doesn't understand Unicode).
One problem I have had using clisp/cygwin under Windows is that its filename
conventions are different from gcl's. Do other file operations work for you
(loadfile, etc.)?
