If you open a terminal window and there start maxima from the command
line: Do you still get a crash? Does it print a message on the
crash?

I think ubuntu also comes with wxmaxima ...

There is a .deb (of 5.16.2) in debian unstable ... you should be
able to compile ubuntu .debs from that in a fairly automatic way
(Perhaps involving pbuilder)
Perhaps somebody who has ubuntu installed is willing to provide such
a binary package for download...

Obviously that would be the best option. For debian there is
backports.org, but I don't know if anything similiar exists for
ubuntu...
