5.17post just means stuff on the trunk after the 5.17 branch.
When the 5.18 branch is created (circa April 1) versions on that
branch will be 5.18.1, 5.18.2, etc, and the trunk will be 5.18post.
The version number is specified in configure.in.
You can change it to something else & re-run the bootstrap script.
