When you install Fink, it installs a GUI called Fink Commander that
makes things easier for beginners. Keep in mind that your students
should install the Developer Tools too. They can find them in the Mac
OS DVDs or they can download them from Apple's website for free. The
Developer Tools are quite big (~1Gb if I remember correctly).
The first time they install Maxima, they can face a quite long
compilation because all the dependencies have to be compiled. It could
take, depending on the machine, several hours. Updates and upgrades
are much faster. It isn't a difficult tasks but it just takes a long
time.
