Who says we have to be POSIX compliant. :-)
And how many people really do give arguments to maxima? All I ever use
is -g and -l once in a while.
But we shouldn't gratuitously be non-compliant. The current
infrastructure can't support both ways (or I'm not smart enough to make
it so).
Or we can use CL getopt_long as Leo suggests.
