On a tangential note, I would also suggest that you use a front-end
for Maxima. There is a maxima-mode and inferior-maxima-mode provided
to edit .mac files and run Maxima within Emacs. There is also Xmaxima, a
GUI provided with Maxima, and wxMaxima, a GUI available separately.
Any one of these options is preferable to running Maxima scripts from
the command-line, at least when debugging/developing or just messing
around.
