(%i1) display2d:false;
(%o1) false
(%i2) solve(x^c-3,x);
Is c an integer?
n;
(%o2) [x = 3^(1/c)]
(%i3)
vs:
(%i1) display2d:false;
(%o1) false
(%i2) solve(x^c-3,x);
Is c an integer?
y;
(%o2) [x = 3^(1/c)]
(%i3)
So why ask whether c is an integer?
If it matters when some of the options are set to non-default values,
then perhaps the question be asked only when needed?
