Ok, this is getting off topic, but I just wanted to advertise the

Right, well I agree this doesn't work so well in plain text. Some people
write TeX snippets in-line with their text, but I personally find that
quite hard to read quickly.

However, I've never really found a situation that well laid out text
(with unicode so you get some subscripts and superscripts and greek
etc.) can't describe well. But I agree that hefty analytical formulas
can be difficult to write out. Your solution of attaching an image seems
very sensible.
