Windows 7 (and I think Vista) have a new mechanism for protection of the
diectories that hold the OS itself, and the installed programs,
typically "Program Files" and/or "Program Files (x86)". Applications
need special prmission, or human intervention, to modify anything in
thse directories. While this helps protect against Trojan attacks, it
causes additional difficulties for semi-automatic patch loading and
other things some applications, especially Lispy applications, want to
do. (For this and other obvious reasons, per-user customization and
preferences should not be stored underneath Program Files. There are
standard places for these things where programs can store these things.
