I don't think speed is an issue.  It's sufficiently fast on my old, slow
233 MHz desktop box -- and today's machines are ca. 10 times faster.

I'm also aware of a couple of things you can do to make it even faster,
but I didn't think it was worthwhile to implement because it's fast
enough today.

By the way, if someone is interested in support for TeX rendered
equations in Xmaxima, then there's a dvi viewer, TkDvi, written in
Tcl/Tk.  Presumably you could grab that code and have native rendering
of dvi in Xmaxima (i.e. without needing dvips, gs etc.).
