Running under Emacs on Windows

Has anyone successfully run Maxima under Emacs on Windows?

After setting maxima-command to a full pathname (a step that isn't
included in the FAQ, by the way), M-x maxima successfully starts a
maxima.exe process, but nothing happens -- Emacs hangs. After
control-G'ing out of the hang, I find the shell buffer empty.

If I start a DOS shell buffer or a csh shell buffer and put in the full
pathname (c:/maxima/Maxima590/lib/maxima/5.9.0/binary-gcl/maxima.exe in
my case), GCL does start, but prints out "Use (help) to get some basic
information on how to use GCL." and returns to the shell.

What am I doing wrong? I assume it has to do with setting various shell
environment variables or registry entries, but the FAQ says nothing
about that.

I am running Emacs 21.2 and Maxima 5.9.0 (GCL 2.5.0 mingw32) on Windows
2000.
