I would definitely vote to commit it.  The only other syntaxes I can
think of (instead of logx) would be either:

a)  logsamplex, which is longer but a bit more descriptive

b)  Get more general, and have a variable xsample which can be set
either globally or in the plot options.  This would allow for new
sampling techniques in the future to be introduced in a controlled
manner.  E.g:  xsample : linear would have Maxima generate points as it
currently does by default, xsample : log would be the new desired
behavior, and other options could be devised.  Perhaps even things like
lists of x values or equations could become arguments in the future. 
This would have to be adapted for polar plots and other varieties.

Just thinking out loud.
