That's not a direction field! that's a plot of the equipotentials for an
electric dipole. The direction fields I'm talking about are those you
can see in:
http://maxima.sourceforge.net/docs/manual/en/maxima_63.html#SEC228
You can click on a point on the plot, and Xmaxima will use a numerical
integrator to compute and plot the integral curve that goes through
that point. You can also move a slider bar and see the direction
field change in real time. You cannot do anything like that in
gnuplot.
