This problem is already reported in the Debian BTS as
#413220: wxmaxima: It is not possible to start maxima help
Unfortunately it seems that Debian is not going to fix this bug
in etch, because they don't consider it important enough.

It seems there is no maxima package at backports.org, but perhaps
you can encourage some debian maintainer to change this. This would
also give you the benefit of newer maxima versions. 5.10.0 in etch
is already quite old.
