Well, I don't think the translations of the manual should be moved.
They do enter into the build process (make dist-gzip builds the
translations as well as en), and anyway all versions of the manual
should be kept together.
I can imagine that all the manual files could be moved but that
would require reworking the build machinery accordingly.
If you want to work out the details, I would be interested to
hear about it.
I'm not opposed to moving the archive directory.
If it is moved, I recommend the name maxima-archive.

My recommendation is to create a new module maxima-doc and
commit the book there. We can migrate other documents into that
directory.
